WPIX To Televise New York Yankees Games

In a multi-year deal with the YES Network, Tribune’s New York CW affiliate will air approximately 20 games this season.

The YES Network and Tribune Media Co. announced Thursday they have reached a multi-year agreement under which Tribune Media’s WPIX New Ylrk has secured exclusive over-the-air rights to the New York Yankees games in the New York DMA beginning with the 2015 Major League Baseball season.  Specific financial terms were not released.

WPIX will televise approximately 20 games this season; its broadcast schedule will be announced at a later date.  The station had been the broadcast home of the Yankees from 1951 through 1998. YES, which remains the exclusive local television rights holder for the Yankees, will televise 125 Yankees games this season.

“We are eager to enter into this new chapter with PIX11,” said Tracy Dolgin, president-CEO, YES Network.  “We look forward to working with PIX11 to bring all of the excitement, tradition and passion of Yankees baseball to fans throughout the Tri-State area.  At the same time, we have appreciated working with My9, which had been our local broadcast partner since 2005.”

“We are extremely excited to be bringing Yankees baseball back to PIX11 and we’re looking forward to a great season,” said Larry Wert, president of broadcast media for Tribune Broadcasting.  “For nearly 50 years, the Yankees were synonymous with PIX11 — we’re thrilled to renew that partnership.  This agreement is another demonstration of PIX11’s commitment to offer its viewers the best news, sports and entertainment programming in the Tri-State area.”

I remember the first year – IIRC it was in the mid 1950’s – when WPIX announced they would be televising EVERY Yankees game, home and away. Mel Allen announcing and P. Ballentine & Son major sponsor. Great memories from my teenage years just 50 miles north of the Big Apple.

Happy for WPIX (Yankees) and WGN (Cubs) for baseball on broadcast stations. Maybe other teams in Major League Baseball will start having some of their games on broadcast stations as well. The NBA and the NHL should also follow suit. In Orlando, we will have some Orlando City Lions (Major League Soccer) games on either WOFL/35 (FOX O&O) or WRBW/65 (MyNet ~ both Station and Network owned by FOX) starting in March.
