In the third installment of this new weekly feature, NetNewsCheck benchmarks the social media activity of local media outlets in Chicago, the country’s third largest market, using data from the audience intelligence firm Shareablee. ABC O&O WLS is by far the big winner this week, topping all other local media with nearly 27 million social actions — 209% more than second place K-LOVE, a Christian FM station — during the six months ending June 1.

The weekday broadcast launches Jan. 12 and will be anchored by veteran WLS anchors Hosea Sanders and Linda Yu, sports anchor Jim Rose and meteorologist Cheryl Scott.

Janet Hundley resigned Friday after more than 12 years as assistant news director at ABC-owned WLS Chicago to become news director of WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee. Hundley’s exit closely follows the resignation of Richard Maginn, executive producer of WLS’s 10 p.m. weekday newscast and a 19-year veteran of the station. Both departures are effective at the end of the May ratings sweeps. No word on replacements.

While much of what passes for news on local television has hit the skids, fortunately there’s still something to be said for solid, old-fashioned investigative reporting in Chicago.
