FX Networks CEO John Landgraf sees no end in sight to the growth of scripted TV production. During his Friday appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour, Landgraf gave a midseason update to his company’s annual tally of dramas, comedies and limited series in productions, and the arrow is still pointing up, as it has been since 2010. Through the first six months of 2018, 319 scripted series have been produced, up 5% from the same period a year ago. Much of the growth is propelled by the robust output of Netflix and other streaming services.
CBS canceled the drama in late May, but left it on the air to play out the remainder of its third season. Those summer episodes, however, performed pretty consistently in the ratings, well enough for CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl to tell reporters Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour that he’s taking a second look at the show.

Dish Network says the removal of Univision Communications’ TV networks — from both its satellite and over-the-top Sling TV services — might be for good. On June 30, after Dish and Univision failed to come to terms on a contract renewal, more than 60 Univision-owned stations and cable channels including UniMás and Galavision went dark on Dish’s pay-TV platforms. “This removal could become permanent,” Dish said in a 10-Q regulatory filing Friday.

NBC’s NFL Preseason Game Tops Thursday
This year’s first preseason game, between the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens, drew a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers, though due to the nature of live sports those numbers could be subject to adjustment later today. That still is down from the 2.3 and 7.8 million last year’s game drew initially, though that game came in at a 2.2 and 7.7 million when the final numbers were tabulated.

Fox TV Group chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman on Thursday outlined more of the vision for “New Fox”, the Fox Broadcast Co. after its sister studio 20th Century Fox TV, along with other key 21st Century Fox assets, move to Disney in the pending acquisition. “We want to be [studios] first choice among the four networks,” Walden said. “We will be the only network to be operating completely independently. It will have the ability to pick up the best shows without any studio agenda.”

‘The Originals’ Series Finale Holds Steady
The series finale of The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals closed out steady in the Wednesday overnight ratings. Airing at 9 p.m., The Originals drew a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 870,000 viewers, even with last week’s episode and on par with what the show has averaged in Live+Same Day during its final season. The CW has already ordered the spinoff series Legacies, which will launch this October. Earlier on CW, Burden of Truth (0.2, 830,000) was also even.
