WUSA Washington Adds Chick Hernandez As Sports Anchor

Chick Hernandez

Tegna CBS affiliate WUSA Washington has hired Chick Hernandez as its 11 p.m. sports anchor and lead anchor for the upcoming Commanders NFL season.

Hernandez was born in Washington and attended the University of Maryland before beginning sportscasting. His career spans more than three decades, with stops in Augusta, Ga., where he was sports director at WRDW.

Hernandez then returned home to WTTG Washington, where he received several Emmy Awards as sports anchor/reporter. He was the first face folks in the region saw when NBC Sports Washington (formerly CSN-MidAtlantic) debuted in 2001.

He also served as the longtime host of the Emmy-winning Redskins Kickoff and Redskins Postgame Live gameday shows. More recently, Hernandez handled play-by-play duties for CBS Sports Network for college football and basketball.

On his return to studio work, Hernandez said: “It is still unreal to me that I am returning to WUSA9. Many moons ago, I was an intern for the late great Glenn Brenner and one of my mentors and friends, James Brown, so this is a full circle moment for me — one that I fully understand the gravity of and will treat appropriately. Not bad for a kid from around the way. See you soon.”
