Rick Swanson, VP of marketing and programming for the Promax Station Summit, reveals a couple new sessions this year that came directly from a committee of station and network marketers who helped him identify the pressing needs of attendees.
The annual dust up in the desert known as the 2019 Promax Station Summit is almost upon us.
Scheduled to start June 18 and run until Friday, June 21, at The Mirage in Las Vegas, the Promax Station Summit brings together the top broadcast networks, program distributors and station ownership groups under one roof for the most powerful week in the broadcast industry.
But for many of the local TV marketing and creative services managers and staff attending, the day they look forward to every year is the session day on Thursday, June 20, known as Promax Day.
Promax Day is the day when industry leaders host sessions tailored specifically for the unique needs of station marketing and creative services professionals, including digital innovation, marketing best practices, the craft of making television promotion and leadership development.
And it’s Rick Swanson’s job as the Summit’s VP of marketing and programming to make sure the Promax Day sessions are informative, educational and thought-provoking for attendees, 40% of whom, Swanson says, will be attending the Summit for the first time.
But Swanson doesn’t do it alone. Every year, he enlists a committee of station and network marketers to help craft sessions based on the changing needs of TV station marketing and promotion people. (See the committee list below).
This year, Swanson says two sessions on Thursday were influenced directly by that committee.
The session “Unstuck,” says Swanson, “brings together the most creative people with deep backgrounds in broadcasting on how they keep that creativity fresh on a daily basis.”
Led by Danielle Ray, creative services director for WDAF, the Fox affiliate in Kansas City, “Unstuck” will bring together the best creative minds in television to find out how they stay fresh and full of creative energy.
Swanson says the committee also wanted sessions that address recruiting and hiring.
“What are the qualities you look for in a candidate? Are they creative, can they play well with others, are they self-motivated, do they have high integrity? Where do you find these people?”
Two sessions on Thursday, “Hire the Best,” and “Find the Best,” hosted by recruiting experts Dr. Alan Schnur and Matthew Youngquist, respectively, will show a process that has proven incredibly useful in hiring the best, along with tips, tricks and techniques for turning up the people who have the qualifications you need.
There are 13 sessions in total scheduled for Promax Day on Thursday, including some perennial favorites like “The State of Our Art,” which showcases the very best creative work from around the world, like this Google ad.
And “Battle of the Promo Superstars,” where station marketing teams, tasked with the same assignment and deadline, go head to head, and where this spoof spot fooled everyone.
See you at the Summit.
NOTE: One session, “Zero Budget Magic: Doing More With Nothing,” another perennial staple, is looking for examples of creative, innovative and resourceful promos produced by stations in-house for little to no budget.
So, if you have on-air promos, PSAs or some spots created specifically for social media that fit the bill, maybe a fresh, approach to everyday type promos such as POPs, testimonials, news series, news image, station image, network and syndicator tie-ins, promercials, or spots for your D2 channels, please submit them.
