The $40 million talk show era might be over, but the genre has plenty of life in it yet. How TV programmers can tap into talk shows’ enduring power — and iterate them more potently for audiences in a multiplatform world — is the subject of a panel, Building the Next Gen Talk Show, at TVNewsCheck’s Programming Everywhere conference at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 14.

Ira Bernstein, co-president, Debmar-Mercury; Bryon Allen, chairman, CEO and president, Allen Media Group and Entertainment Studios; Lauren Blincoe, SVP current programs, Telepictures, Warner Bros.; Jenny Depper, SVP, E! News; and Portia Bruner, host, Fox Television Stations’ Portia, will join moderator Michael Depp, chief content officer, NewsCheckMedia and editor, TVNewsCheck, for the 11:15 a.m. discussion.

“In an austerity-minded industry, we need to look at what happens to the talk show in a barter-only environment and the creative responses we see to that,” Depp said. “Compelling shows and hosts still have the power to build enduring, deeply loyal audiences, and they can come from anywhere.

“This panel will look very closely about the necessary foundations of a good talker and its host, the value of local and regional offerings and how AI can potentially enhance production efficiencies,” he added. “We’ll also drill into the multiplatform playbook any talk show needs to find and hold an audience in this fragmented era.”

Programming Everywhere convenes programming executives, leaders in news, digital and streaming, technologists, talent and content creators from across multiple media to catalyze new thinking for TV’s future. Other panels include:

  • Programming Leaders on Ideas Beyond Boundaries
