Hadl To Succeed Faubell As Hearst Engineering VP

Stefan Hadl is tapped to succeed Martin Faubell who will retire next year. Hadl will oversee the Hearst stations’ engineering operations and staffs.

Stefan Hadl, the director of engineering, Eastern region, for Hearst Television since 2017, has been promoted to vice president of engineering. He succeeds Martin Faubell, who assumes the title of senior director of engineering, ahead of a planned retirement from the company in 2020.

The announcement was made today by Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television president.

“Stefan has proven to be an outstanding leader at every assignment, leading some of our premier television stations first as a director of engineering, and most recently working closely with Marty setting the course for the technological future of Hearst Television,” Wertlieb continued.  “We are truly fortunate to be able to seamlessly transition our best-in-class engineering leadership over the next 18 months.”

Hadl joined Hearst Television in 1995 as a broadcast engineer at KCRA, later to become part of the company’s Sacramento duopoly, KCRA-KQCA, and was promoted to engineering supervisor and assistant chief engineer.

After subsequently serving as director of engineering at Hearst Television’s WMUR Manchester, N.H., he returned to KCRA-KQCA as director of engineering. In 2015, Hadl became director of engineering and operations of Hearst Television’s WCVB-TV in Boston.

In his most recent role as director of engineering, Eastern region, he has overseen the engineering operations of 14 Hearst television stations as well as the company’s Baltimore radio stations.

Hadl began his career in broadcast engineering while in the United States Air Force, earning his discharge as a Television Equipment Specialist NCOIC (Level 7) at Los Angeles AFB. He holds an A.S. degree in electronic systems technology from USAF Community College/Chapman University and is a graduate of the Airman Leadership School and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Leadership School. He is a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers.

Faubell served as vice president of engineering for Hearst Television since 1997, overseeing the company’s engineering operations and staffs. Among other achievements, he supervised the stations’ transfer from analog to digital television broadcasting and he arranged dedicated satellite access for enhanced newsgathering and content-sharing between the company’s stations, speeding their ability to bring important national and international news to local audiences.

Previously, Faubell was director of engineering for Hearst Television’s WTAE Pittsburgh, where he supervised the introduction of technological advancements including robotic cameras, satellite newsgathering resources and digital editing equipment.

Before WTAE, he was assistant chief engineer at WPIX New York and, before that, he was engineering maintenance supervisor at WRAL Raleigh, N.C.

A native of Cherry Hill, NJ, Faubell holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast engineering and a master’s degree in broadcast management, both from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.  He is a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers.
