‘Bethenny,’ ‘Maury’ Top Week’s Standouts

The two talkers are among the few shows that posted gains in the preemption-studded week ending June 24.

Ratings for syndicated shows were decidedly mixed as schools let out and the summer ratings season officially began in the week ending June 24. Newcomer Bethenny (WBDTD) continued to be a bright spot, scoring huge demo and rating increases in the third week of a six-week trial run.

Talk Shows

Among the established talkers, Maury (NBCU), which often does well in the summer months, shot into the lead for the first time since the week of Aug. 29, 2011, with a 9% gain from the prior session to a 2.5.

Usual leader Dr. Phil (CTD), which was in repeats all week, had several top-market preemptions, and dipped 4% to a new season low 2.4. Dr. Oz (Sony) also fell to a new season low, sinking 8% to a 2.2.

In addition, Live with Kelly (Disney-ABC) eroded 8% to a new season low 2.2, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (WBDTD) lost 11% to a 1.7. The Doctors (CTD) remained at a 1.5, but surged 15% from last year at this time, which was the biggest year-to-year advance among the top six talkers.

The newest talk entry, Bethenny, was on fire in its latest week. The former Real Housewives of New York star’s show was up 38% in households from its year-ago time period average to a  1.1 rating/4 share in its six metered markets and grew 100% among women 25-54, 125% among women 18-49 and a whopping 200% among women 18-34.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

First-Run Freshmen

The nationally rated rookie strips Anderson (WBDTD) added 8% to a 1.3 in households and soared 50% among women 18-34, topping the first-run freshmen class for the 41st consecutive week.

Jeremy Kyle (Debmar-Mercury) was flat at a 0.5, tying We the People with Gloria Allred (Entertainment Studios), which gained 25% to a 0.5. And in latenight, Excused (CTD) slipped 14% to a 0.6.

Court Shows

Judge Judy (CTD) presided over the court shows and everything else in first run with a 6.2, which was unchanged from the week before. Judge Joe Brown (CTD) rose 4% to a 2.4; People’s Court (WBDTD) tacked on 5% to a 2.0; while Judge Mathis (WBDTD) skidded 7% to a 1.4.

Magazine Shows

Access Hollywood (NBCU) was the only magazine to improve from the week before, climbing 6% to a 1.8 in households. In addition, the show was up 20 among women 18-34.

Leader Entertainment Tonight (CTD) and Inside Edition (CTD) held steady at 3.3 and 2.8, respectively. TMZ (WBDTD), which was the only mag to decline in the prior frame, was flat at a 1.8, while Extra (WBDTD), which was preempted 19 times (mostly by the NBA Finals), and The Insider (CTD), each dipped 7% to a 1.4.

Game Shows

Among the game shows, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) stumbled to a new season low for the second straight week, decling 2% to a 5.8. Jeopardy (CTD) was flat at a 5.1; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) picked up 3% to a 3.2; and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) appreciated 9% to a 2.5.

Off-Net Sitcoms

In off-net syndication, Big Bang Theory (WBDTD) was unchanged from the week before at a 6.3. Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) fell 2% to a 5.0; Family Guy (Twentieth) rose 5% to a 4.0; How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) was down 7% to a 2.7; Everybody Loves Raymond (CTD) rallied 14% to a 2.4, tying King of the Hill (Twentieth), which declined 4% to a 2.4.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

The off-net weekly hours were led by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBCU) and Criminal Minds (CTD), which both dropped 3% from the previous session to a 2.8. Law & Order (NBCU) tumbled 17% to a 2.5, tying Without a Trace (WBDTD), which spiked 19% to a 2.5. In fifth place, Monk (NBCU) rebounded 9% to a 2.4.
