Can You Really Grow Revenue With Analytics?

The president of analytics firm Decentrix says that you can. By closely monitoring and analyzing the sale operation and taking action based on the data, a TV station "should reasonably expect" to grow spot revenue by more than 11% and achieve a return on its investment in the analytics within months.

The broadcast industry has become a complicated place.

 In addition to dealing with an ongoing period of flat spot TV ad sales, broadcast stations face the prospect of declining ratings and increasing competition from over-the-top (OTT) providers. They are unsure about the true impact of “cord cutting” on their business. They realize they need to develop a strategy for moving into the world of ATSC 3.0, but they don’t know how to chart that course — or even what their end goal should be.

With a sophisticated and robust analytics system in place to provide intelligence, insights, and action items, a broadcast station should reasonably expect revenue increases well in excess of 11% and — for those on the cutting edge — ROIs in a matter of months.

The problem is you have too many old school GMs and Sales managers, That still believe that spot revenue is coming back and that political is their salvation every 2- 4 years,,,Good Luck……Rest in Peace!!

Not defending the article, as much as the idea of using metrics to make smart decisions. It is possible to do actual work and use data to do it better. Station websites need to get their acts together (beyond Taboola and Outbrain).
Direct mail and e-commerce have been using data forever with multivariate testing, lift analysis, conversion rates, etc. Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, Amazon, et al are doing it now with video. Haystack is starting with news. Broadcast loves techno gibberish, as long as it is about towers, spectrum, and control rooms. We need to join the rest of the world with analytics… and digital is the best place to begin this effort… culturally.

Clients and Tv stations are buried in data, it’s knowing what to do with it, that’s the real answer.
This was as true in 1987 as it is in 2017 right now…it’s just that data has become cheaper to access. Ask QVC.com

Broadcast groups have the data (or should have) and the Analytics should show them how to make sense of the data and uncover trends. However the real problem comes when these groups have to deliver new insights from this information. Most broadcast groups are still stuck with the old business plan and beat the GM,GSM,LSM to death on delivering the core and taking share of that core from the competition so most new insights get lost on the treadmill to oblivion.
