Courts And Games Have An Up Week

Ratings for four of the top five magazines surged in the pre-sweep week ending Oct. 27, with coverage of Kanye West’s spectacular proposal to Kim Kardashian at the San Francisco Giants’ baseball stadium that he had rented along with an orchestra.

Leader Entertainment Tonight was the highest rated mag for the 900th week in a row; Inside Edition and TMZ saw double-digit increases; Access Hollywood posted its biggest ratings since mid-April and improved 13% from last year; while Extra grew both week to week and year to year despite being preempted 28 times by World Series Games.

In daytime, Dr. Phil topped the talkers for the 10th consecutive and opened up its widest lead yet over the field this season. Live with Kelly and Michael and Ellen were neck and neck in second place, with both up from last year, while a steady Dr. Oz was not far behind.

Steve Harvey gained the most of any talk show from last year, climbing 42%, and teammate Steve Wilkos strengthened week to week, while Wendy Williams had the second-best year-to-year gain, up 40%.

Among the rookies, Queen Latifah ruled the category for the sixth week in a row, however fellow newcomer Bethenny shot up 33% week to week among women 25-54 to a 0.8, and for the first time topped Queen, which posted a 0.6 in the key demo after being preempted in some markets, including New York.
