CUNY TV Goes Broadcast On WNYE Subchannel

CUNY TV, the television service of the City University of New York, today announced its new, expanded free digital broadcast signal on ch. 25.3, which, it says, nearly quadruples its household availability in the metro-area.

Residents of Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester and even parts of Connecticut can now watch CUNY TV’s programming for free over the air thanks to a merger of technical operations between NYC Media’s WNYE New York (ch. 25) and CUNY TV’s headquarters. CUNY TV will continue to be offered on cable on ch. 75 within the five boroughs. The merger also provides CUNY TV with its own HD radio station, set to launch at the end of 2013.

To celebrate the new channel, the station launches four new, original primetime series chronicling Asian-American life, Irish writers, the arts and independent film as well as four specials examining the recession, baby boomers, avant-garde film, and late mayor Ed Koch. The shows will debut the week of June 10.

“Viewers hungry for ideas, profiles, insights, arts coverage, and international award-winning films will find them in these thought-provoking, innovative new series,” said Robert Isaacson, who has been CUNY TV executive director since 1992. “Even better, viewers without cable or those living outside the five boroughs are now able to connect with CUNY TV all day, every day.”
