‘Dr. Phil’ A Standout In A Slow Syndie Week
Ratings for most syndicated shows were flat to down in the week ending June 10 as PUT levels declined in the warm late spring weather. In addition, most programs were buffeted with preemptions for local election reports on June 6, President Obama’s press conference on June 8 and coverage of the French Open tennis and U.S. Open golf tournaments.
Talk Shows
The only first-run daytime strip to buck the downtrend was an all-repeat week of Dr. Phil (CTD), which grew 4% from the week before to a 2.6 and topped the talkers for the 32nd time this season.
Dr. Oz (Sony) was unchanged at a 2.4; Live weakened 4% to a 2.3; Maury (NBCU) faded 4% to a fourth-place 2.2; and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (WBDTD) tumbled 15% to a new season low 1.7. In the past two weeks, Ellen has lost 29% of its ratings, sliding from a 2.4 to a 1.7.
Meanwhile, the newest talk show entry, Bethenny (WBDTD), which is getting a six-week test run on six Fox stations, averaged a 1.1 rating/4 share on Monday, June 18 in the overnights. This represented erosion of 27% from its debut on Monday, June 11. Bethenny was still up 38% from its year-ago time period average, but down 15% from its lead-in.
First-Run Freshmen
BRAND CONNECTIONS
In first-run rookie action among the nationally rated shows, leader Anderson (WBDTD) was in repeats all week and slipped 14% to a 1.2 after being preempted in 36 markets.
Jeremy Kyle (Debmar-Mercury) and We the People with Gloria Allred (Entertainment Studios) were flat at 0.5 and 0.4, respectively. Excused (CTD), in reruns all week, gave back 14% to a 0.6.
Court Shows
Celebrating a milestone this week, Judge Joe Brown (CTD), which held steady at a 2.4, marked 700 weeks in a row as the second-highest-rated court show in syndication. Leader Judge Judy (CTD) continued to dominate the courtrooms despite dipping 2% from the previous week to a new season low 6.1.
In third place, People’s Court (WBDTD) dropped 5% to a 1.8; Judge Mathis (WBDTD) softened 7% to a 1.4; Judge Alex (Twentieth) slumped 7% to a new season low 1.3, tying Divorce Court (Twentieth), which was unchanged at a 1.3.
Magazine Shows
Magazines were mostly even with the prior session, although topper Entertainment Tonight (CTD) downticked 3% to a new season low 3.2. Inside Edition (CTD), TMZ (WBDTD), Access Hollywood (NBCU), The Insider (CTD) and Extra (WBDTD) all held firm at 2.8, 1.9, 1.7, 1.4 and 1.4, respectively.
Game Shows
Among game shows, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) was flat at a 6.1; Jeopardy (CTD) inched up 2% to a 5.3; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) fell 3% to a 3.0; and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) devalued 8% to a new season low 2.2.
Off-Net Sitcoms
Big Bang Theory (WBDTD) headed the off-net sitcom list, but slipped 2% to a 6.2. Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) sank 6% to a new season low 4.9; Family Guy (Twentieth) and How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) were unchanged at 3.6 and 2.8, respectively; King of the Hill (Twentieth) was up 4% to a 2.4; while Seinfeld (Sony) slipped 8% to a 2.2.
Off-Net Weekly Hours
The top off-net weekly hours were on fire. Law & Order (NBCU) jumped into the lead with a 30% increase from the prior session to a 3.0. Right behind was Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBCU), which ballooned 45% to a new season high 2.9; Without a Trace (WBDTD) rose 8% to a 2.8 and landed in a tie with Criminal Minds (CTD), which was unchanged at a 2.8; while Monk (NBCU) moved 4% lower to a 2.5.
