DMA 48: GREENSBORO, NC

Hearst Completes Purchase Of WCWG

The sale, announced in October 2017, gives Hearst a duopoly in the market. It also owns NBC affiliate WXII and has been operating WCWG under a shared services agreement.

Hearst today announced it has completed its $3.3 million acquisition of CW affiliate WCWG Greensboro, N.C. (DMA 48), from Lockwood Broadcast Group.

Hearst subsidiary Hearst Television, which owns the market’s NBC affiliate WXII, has been partnering with WCWG and its digital subchannel, which carries Bounce, under a channel-sharing arrangement. Hearst has been operating WCWG under a shared services agreement.

“We are truly excited to add WCWG to Hearst Television, growing our presence in the Triad community with even more news and entertainment programming,” said Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb. “WXII’s proven leadership and commitment to serve the community makes them an excellent partner for WCWG as it continues to grow.”

In August 2017, WXII launched a 10 p.m. hour-long weeknight newscast, two hours of weekday morning news and half-hour weekend newscasts on WCWG.

The acquisition adds a fourth CW affiliate to the Hearst station group, which also includes CW-affiliated stations in Orlando, Fla., and Kansas City, Mo., as well as a digital CW channel in the Fort Smith-Fayetteville, Ark., market.
