Jim Serra To Retire As KPLC VP-GM

He’s stepping down next month from the Raycom NBC affiliate in Lake Charles, La., where he began his broadcasting career in 1975.

Jim Serra, longtime vice president and general manager of KPLC Lake Charles, La. (DMA 174), has decided to retire in June. Serra has been a leader of the Raycom Media NBC affiliate for more than 30 years.

Serra graduated in 1975 from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and his first job right out of college was at KPLC.  He was an anchor, reporter, photographer and producer before leaving to pursue more career opportunities in other markets.

Serra spent time at KSLA Shreveport, La.; WAVE Louisville, Ky.; WTVJ Miami; KSDK St. Louis.

In 1982, Serra returned to KPLC as national sales manager. He moved up to general sales manager and was named VP-GM in 1990.

“Jim has had an amazing 34-year career at KPLC, and it has been a privilege to work with him,” said Sandy Breland, Raycom Media Group VP. “Under Jim’s leadership, KPLC has thrived as a dominant station and strong voice in the community. He has always been an advocate for his employees and his community. I wish Jim and Debbie much happiness as they start this well-deserved new chapter in their lives.”

Serra has held many service-oriented positions during his tenure at KPLC, including leadership positions for the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. The LAB also named Serra Broadcaster of the Year in 2014.
