KWCH To Debut 4 & 9 P.M. News On KSCW

Sunflower Broadcasting’s CBS affiliate in Wichita, Kan., will produce the two half-hour newscasts for the co-owned CW affil beginning in September.

Sunflower Broadcasting, the owner of KWCH CBS) and KSCW (CW) Wichita, Kan. (DMA 68), today announced the launch of 4 and 9 p.m. newscasts on KSCW beginning Sept. 12.

The KWCH 12 Eyewitness News team will produce the 30-minute newscasts, anchored by KWCH’s Cindy Klose at 4 and Roger Cornish at 9. The newscasts will highlight local news and weather, national headlines, breaking news, sports and daily features.

“We are the news and information leader throughout the day, on-air and online,” said Chad Cross, Sunflower News Director. “Now, we’re providing even more options, so viewers can get their news when they want it,” added Cross.

KSCW now carries Eyewitness News from 7 to 9 a.m. each weekday morning, and airs the Catch It Kansas Show on Friday nights at 11 p.m.  All of the local news and sports programming on both KWCH and KSCW airs in full high definition.

“We put a high priority on local news and information and the acquisition of KSCW has allowed us to expand our commitment to our viewers on-air,” said Joan Barrett, president-GM of Sunflower Broadcasting.

KWCH will continue to produce Eyewitness News at Nine for Fox Kansas, KSAS, through the end of the year.

It seems weird to me that even though KSCW became owned by the same company as KWCH three years ago that they still produced news for Newport Television’s KSAS; the fact that KWCH will probably be airing 9 p.m. newscasts (likely the same one) on KSCW and KSAS is even stranger. But since KWCH will be producing KSAS’ newscasts until the end of 2011, this gives the station three options it has to mull over for news: have the station produce its own newscasts at its studios (joining its Newport-owned/operated Fox-affiliated sister stations in Tulsa, Albany and Little Rock), have Independent News Network produce its newscasts (which is probably not likely) or sign a deal with KAKE and KSNW (the latter of which produced KSAS’ newscasts before in the late 1990s) to produce newscasts for them.

BTW, Sunflower Broadcasting is the licensee of KWCH and KSCW, Schurz Communications actually owns the two stations.
