Magazines Rack Up Syndie Viewers

Most of the genre turned in strong increases in the week ending Jan. 6. Other shows doing well included a number of talk shows, Judge Judy, Family Feud and Law & Order: SVU.

Magazines were hot in the first week of the new year, with six of the seven shows moving up and most scoring double-digit increases. In daytime, Judge Judy (CTD) topped the court shows for a milestone 850th week in a row, while Live with Kelly and Michael (Disney-ABC) led the talkers for a third consecutive week in the frame ending Jan. 6.

Magazine Shows

On the magazine rack, Entertainment Tonight (CTD) set the pace with a 16% jump from the week before to a 3.6. Inside Edition (CTD) added 12% to a 2.9; TMZ (WBDTD) perked up 6% to a 1.8; Access Hollywood (NBCU) surged 21% to a 1.7, which was the greatest gain in the category; Extra (WBDTD) improved 15% to a 1.5, even though its primary run was preempted more than a dozen times, primarily for football.

The Insider (CTD) was unchanged at a 1.4, however, metered market ratings for its replacement, the new OMG! Insider, which premiered Jan. 7, were up sharply. OMG grew 6% in households to a 1.8 rating/4 share in its first week and increased 20% among women 25-54 compared to the last four weeks of the original Insider. Rookie Dish Nation (Twentieth) also improved, rising 13% to a 0.9.

Court Shows

Judge Judy was the highest rated show by far in daytime, spiking 14% from the week before to a 6.6, and winning the court show race for the 850th straight week, or every week for more than the last 16 years.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Judge Joe Brown (CTD) was the No. 2 courtroom, clocking a 4% gain to a 2.4; Judge Joe Brown (CTD) tacked on 5% to a 2.0; while Judge Mathis (WBDTD) was flat at a 1.6.

Talk Shows

Among the new talk show entries, Katie (Disney-ABC) climbed 6% from the prior session to a 1.9, its best rating in seven weeks. Like many other shows, Katie was in reruns all week.

Steve Harvey (NBCU), which has just been renewed for year two, advanced 8% to a 1.4. Jeff Probst (CTD) held firm at a 0.8; Ricki Lake (Twentieth) was flat at a 0.7; while Trisha (NBCU) dipped 20% to a 0.4.

Live with Kelly and Michael, which aired repackaged shows for most of the week, was the top-rated talker overall for the third time in three weeks, although it was off 7% to a 2.7. Dr. Phil (CTD) jumped 13% to a second-place 2.6; Ellen (WBDTD) rallied 10% to a 2.3, tying Dr. Oz (Sony), which was up 5% to a 2.3; while Maury (NBCU) was right behind, easing 8% to a 2.2.

Game Shows

In game show action, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) was up 3% from the week before to a 6.9; Jeopardy (CTD) inched ahead 2% to a 6.0; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) strengthened 11%, setting a new season — and series — high at 5.1 (In key demos, Feud tied for No. 1 with Judge Judy in women 18-49 (2.2) and adults 18-49 (1.9), while tying for No. 2 with Wheel of Fortune among women 25-54 (2.6) and adults 25-54 (2.2.) Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) declined 4% to a 2.4; while freshman Baggage (GSN) picked up 9% to a 1.2.

Off-Net Sitcoms

In off-net, Big Bang Theory (WBDTD) rose 9% to a 7.4, topping the syndication chart. Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) edged up 6% to a 5.3; Family Guy (Twentieth) and How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) were unchanged at 3.6 an 3.1, respectively.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Among off-net weekly hours, Law & Order: SVU (NBCU) shot up 88% to a new season high 4.9. Sister show Law & Order (NBCU) was unchanged at a 3.0. Criminal Minds (CTD) moved up 8% to a 2.7 and landed in a tie with House (NBCU), which dropped 16% to a 2.7.
