WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Olympics Do A Number On Syndies In Week 2

Few shows post gains in the week ending Feb. 23, regardless of genre. Among them are Jerry Springer, Judge Judy, Inside Edition and a couple off-net offerings.

For a second straight week, most of daytime syndication was hammered by the Winter Olympics. And again, several shows chose to have Nielsen exclude their ratings in the session ending Feb. 23.

For example, only one talk show was up from the prior frame, namely veteran Jerry Springer, now in its 23rd year, which advanced 8%, matching its season high.

Dr. Phil topped the talkers for the 26th time in the past 29 weeks, holding steady in households despite the Sochi competition, and actually improving 6% to a first-place 1.8 in the key women 25-54 demo.

Live with Kelly and Michael, the No. 2 talker, was down slightly, after being preempted in some markets by the women’s gold medal hockey game on Feb. 20, but still grew 4% from last year.

Moving into third place in talk was Maury, although it finished first among women 18-34 and tied Dr. Phil for first place among women 18-49. Next in line were Wendy Williams, Rachael Ray and Steve Wilkos, all of which did well to hold firm at their previous levels, while five other talkers chose to retitle their shows in the face of Olympics competition and preemptions.

At the very top of the syndication chart, Judge Judy was one of the few programs to improve, leading all shows for the 24th time in the past 26 weeks and gaining 3% both week to week and year to year.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Meanwhile, in the metered markets yesterday, ratings for the five top entertainment magazines went right through the roof with next-day coverage of the Academy Awards.

Leader Entertainment Tonight jumped 40% from last year at this time to a 4.9 rating/8 share; Access Hollywood surged 38% to a 2.9/5; Extra soared 42% to a 2.7/5; The Insider leaped 33% to a 2.0/4; while TMZ rose 19% to a 1.9/4.

In addition, Monday’s Live with Kelly and Michael Oscar special rocketed 63% to a 4.9/14.

Back in the nationals, the week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.8, up 6% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Michael (1.5, -6%)
  • Maury (1.4, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (1.3, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (1.1, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
