Utah Scientific to Unveil 4K Routing Switcher

This week Utah Scientific is showing off what we can expect to see at this year’s NAB Show: Lots of 4K applications.

The routing and master control switchers manufacturer introduced an extension of the Utah-100/UDS routing switcher family Tuesday with a new range of routing switchers offering 6 Gbps UHD-SDI signal capabilities to support new 4K signal formats used in ultra-high-definition TV production.

The solution provides twice the density — at half the power —at a lower cost than competitive 3 Gbps multi-link solutions, according to the company.

Utah is clearly getting a jump-start on the 4K craze, as many analysts don’t expect live television to broadcast in 4K until 2016 at the earliest. Currently, a handful of television shows are being shot in 4K to future-proof archives.

The Utah-100/UDS 4K routers are controlled and monitored through a built-in Web interface that allows users to operate the system from a Web browser for local or remote control. There’s also an iPad app available for download to control the routers.

Tom Harmon, president-CEO of Utah Scientific, said the Utah-100/UDS family of routers can be tailored to fit any operation. “The 4K version is the result of our close cooperation with Semtech’s Gennum Product Group, which is rolling out a family of UHD-SDI components for the new signal formats. But working closely with component suppliers, we are able to offer our customers the solutions they are looking for as they incorporate the latest technologies into their routing infrastructure.”
