WaPo’s Gelman To Keynote NewsTECHForum

The Washington Post’s director of video and senior editor will highlight a conference gathering news, technology and digital executives to discuss the newspaper’s aggressive video strategy and role as a multiplatform news competitor.

Micah Gelman, director of video and senior editor at The Washington Post, will appear in a keynote interview at TVNewsCheck’s NewsTECHForum 2017, where he will discuss the Post’s ambitious video strategy, this year’s biggest initiative for the Jeff Bezos-owned paper.

Gelman leads a team of about 70 in the Post’s video department following a major hiring ramp-up earlier this year. He will be interviewed by TVNewsCheck Special Projects Editor Michael Depp at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the New York Hilton.

The Washington Post has made a major effort to become a formidable producer of video news,” Depp said. “The paper is particularly aiming at over-the-top platforms, placing it more directly as a competitor to TV news in addition to its arms race with top digital and newspaper peers.”

Gelman joined the Post in 2015 after heading video strategy for Discovery Communications, where he oversaw the implementation of TV Everywhere for Discovery’s 11 domestic television networks.

Prior to Discovery, Gelman led domestic online video distribution for The Associated Press. He is the recipient of more than a dozen Edward R. Murrow and Emmy Awards in addition to a Webby.

NewsTECHForum, now in its sixth year, will also feature sessions on Creating the Newsroom of the Future; The Contribution Revolution; Chasing Millennials in 2018; Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and the State of the Art in TV Graphics; Drones & News Photography; Beating the Smartphone Weather App; and Conquering the Multiplatform News Jungle.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Set for Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 11-12, NewsTECHForum is co-located with the Sports Video Group Summit, where nearly 2,000 sports production and management executives gather to pursue excellence in sports production. NewsTECHForum attendees will have access to the SVG Summit’s program and its Technology Showcase of more than 60 exhibiting manufacturers.
