WAVY-WVBT Ups Mark Kurtz To News Director

The Media General Norfolk NBC-Fox duopoly promotes him from assistant news director. He will have oversight of all facets of the stations’ broadcast and digital news content.

Mark Kurtz has been named news director of Media General’s Norfolk, Va. (DMA 42), duopoly WAVY (NBC) and WVBT (Fox). In his new role, Kurtz will have oversight of all facets of the stations’ broadcast and digital news content. He has been assistant news director since 2012 and succeeds Jim Gilchriest who left in June.

“Mark is a committed journalist and has played an extremely engaged role in our newsroom development,” said WAVY-SVBT President-GM Doug Davis. “He has the joint broadcast/digital mindset to ensure WAVY’s news content reaches our viewers and users wherever they are, and I look forward to his strategic perspective as he becomes a key member of our leadership team.”

A journalism graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Kurtz began his career in his hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, as a photographer at KZTV before assuming the roles of reporter, anchor and assistant news director at KXXV Waco, Texas. He was then named news director at KWES-KTLE Midland-Odessa, Texas.
