WXYZ Names Dave Manney News Director

Scripps taps the managing editor of WNBC New York to lead the news operations of its Detroit ABC affiliate.

Scripps-owned WXYZ Detroit (DMA 11) has hired Dave Manney to be the ABC affiliate’s news director beginning Monday, Jan. 6.

Manney joins WXYZ from WNBC New York, where he was managing editor. He also has managed daily television and online news coverage as managing editor of WPIX New York. Prior to that, he managed programming and created online projects as the director of content for Detroit Public Television.

This will be Manney’s second stint at WXYZ — he spent eight years there as an investigative producer, the executive producer of programming and the station’s assistant news director. He also worked as the station’s online news manager, creating  ground-breaking interactive digital efforts.

In addition to his television resume, Manney was also the editorial director for Hour Media, a Michigan’s magazine group, and was director of communications for the city of Detroit from 2003 to 2005, managing the administration’s first city-wide press team.

Manney has received numerous awards, including a national Edward R. Murrow award for coverage of Hurricane Sandy, and a national Emmy nomination for coverage of the Empire State Building shooting. He was a finalist in the Investigative Reporters and Editors awards and received the NATPE Iris Award for program writing. He has also been honored with eight regional Emmy awards, a silver medal from the New York Festivals and multiple awards from the Associated Press and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
