WYFF Set To Celebrate 60 Years On The Air

Dec. 31 marks the 60th anniversary of Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate WYFF Greenville-Spartanburg, SC-Asheville, N.C. (DMA 37). WYFF (formerly WFBC) signed-on a few minutes before midnight on Dec. 31, 1953. The station was the brainchild of radio owners Roger Peace and R.A. Jolly. The men joined forces and debuted WFBC as the “Giant of the Southern Skies.” WFBC was renamed WYFF, Your Friend Four, in 1983. “WYFF 4 has been a strong legacy television station serving the Carolinas and Georgia for 60 years,” said John Soapes, WYFF president-GM. “Our commitment to quality news, exceptional programming and goodwill in the community will continue for many years to come.”

Back in the 1970’s, WFBC-TV had a really classy sign-off which was basically a tour of the engineering side of the station. The “Your Friend Four” slogan debuted in 1980. I have an off-air VTR of a promo with a bunch of high school cheerleaders doing the “Give me a Y, O”, etc., cheer. This station was always a class act. Glad to see it staying that way…
