‘Access’ Generates Its Own Summer Heat

It’s the only magazine to outperform its year-ago numbers, improving 10% from last year as well as strengthening 10% week to week.

Access had the hot hand among the magazines in the otherwise quiet dog days of summer session ending Aug 11. Despite being one of several shows preempted in some markets by preseason football, the entertainment newsmag was able to score the only increase in the hotly contested category.

In addition, Access was the sole magazine to outperform its year-ago numbers, improving 10% from last year as well as strengthening 10% week to week to a 1.1 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, tying an unchanged TMZ.

Inside Edition, which stayed at a 2.5, and Entertainment Tonight, which dipped 4% to a 2.3, led the group.

At the top of the household ratings, Judge Judy, with a syndication-best 5.8, ate everyone’s lunch fourth time in five weeks, even though it was in reruns on all five days. Moreover, the hit show was blacked out on three of the five days (along with other programs) on the 28 CBS-owned stations carried by satellite giant DirecTV and AT&T U-verse in 14 markets including New York and Los Angeles.

Also holding back Judy and other daytimers were preemptions for President Trump’s Aug. 5 address on the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings.

Meanwhile, the talk show race was a tight fit for the lead with Dr. Phil, which was completely in repeats, prevailing and finishing first among households for the 153rd week in a row.

Live with Kelly and Ryan was right there, hanging tough at a 1.9 and extending its streak as the No. 2 talker to 24 consecutive weeks.

Ellen DeGeneres was best of the rest, although slipping 7% to a 1.3.

Elsewhere, week five of the six-week tryout that began July 15 for comedic game show Punchline performed at a 0.3 rating/1 share weighted metered market average, which was off 40% from both its lead-ins and August 2018 time periods.

In another trial, week one of a three-week test that began Aug. 12 for talker Jerry O starring Jerry O’Connell, earned a 1.0 rating/4 share primary run weighted average airing in a number of large-market Wendy Williams timeslots. That was down 17% from its lead-ins, but even with its year-ago time periods. Day one of the second week (Aug 19) saw the household rating move up to a 1.1, with improvements in Dallas and Phoenix.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, unchanged from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.7, -13%)
  • Maury (0.6, unchanged)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, unchanged), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
