Les Simpson, publisher of the Morris Communications-owned, 30,000-circulation Amarillo Globe-News, sees a not-distant future where local TV and radio have been just as roiled by disruptors as newspapers. Only in this future, the newspapers prevail as the highest volume purveyors of local content with the most mature digital platform.

Trey Fabacher is out at Meredith’s Atlanta CBS affiliate. On the bright side, the station did announce a new news director, Larry Perret, who came from Kansas City. He takes over for Lane Michaelsen, who left in July and now works with Sinclair in Maryland.

Cameryn Beck, KTVK Phoenix news director, will join the station group as a senior director of news strategy, working with Lana Durban.

The CBS affiliate dropped a noon newscast three years ago. The new broadcast will debut Sept. 15 and will be anchored by Jocelyn Connell, with Jim Loznicka providing weather. At 12:30 p.m., the station will debut Atlanta Unplugged, a local lifestyle show hosted by Parker Wallace.

He will take over the post at the Utica, N.Y., NBC affiliate from Steve McMurray, who is now VP-GM.

Television stations have lured several journalists away from regional dailies to contribute to their websites in recent years. And as revenue for print ads continues to decline, local television, with its comparatively stable advertising base, is looking increasingly attractive.

The station group’s new news chief, Katherine Green, has a mandate to improve and expand local news. With expansion underway in a number of markets, she says her goal now is “to create the profound consumer experience. What would I love for the Tribune stations? I would love for them to begin connecting in ways we haven’t done before to really move forward and advance information. I don’t want people to think news is dead. I want people to think news is alive and it’s shifting and it’s becoming an exhilarating experience.”

With the addition of the new weekday broadcasts, the Tribune Fox affiliate airs 56.5 hours of news a week.
