NATPE Failed To Revive Sleepy Syndie Biz

In years past, you could get a pretty good idea of what new syndicated offerings will be airing this fall and which won’t at NATPE and the days immediately following. Not this year. Eleven days after the show ended, there is still no word on clearances for the handful of new shows and a couple of year-old ones on the bubble.

Off-Net Cable Market For Dramas Cools

Successful broadcast procedurals used to be a gold mine for studios that would sell them for top dollar in cable syndication and internationally. While the appetite overseas for high-end U.S. close-ended dramas remains healthy, that is no longer the case among domestic cable networks. With ratings for off-network procedurals not as strong as they used to be — leading to major financial losses by cable networks on existing syndication deals — interest in broadcast dramas has been on a decline.

Testing, Ownership Key To Better Syndication

A NATPE panel of station and syndication execs says that while time slots are tight with so many shows being renewed, there’s a need to extensively test new offerings before rolling them out. In addition, new shows have a better chance to succeed if station groups have an ownership stake in them.

ABC’s Friday comedy Last Man Standing was not a hot off-network commodity when Twentieth Television first took it syndication buyers at NATPE 2014. For the week of Dec.5, Last Man Standing was No.4 among all 19 comedies airing in broadcast syndication. It’s hard to pinpoint one reason behind the show’s unexpected strong syndication run. But one may be  Tim Allen — star-driven sitcoms have always been a major draw for stations looking for off-network product.
