Here’s another small sampling of the investigative reporting being done at stations. The stories turned up breaches of airport security in Nashville; abbreviated prison sentences in Indiana; industrial pollution in North Birmingham, Ala.; and uncertified, previously owned mattresses in Detroit.
The group moves Michael Renda from WFLD-WPWR Chicago to take over WJBK Detroit, succeeding Jeff Murri who died in February. It then moves Dennis Welsh from its WOFL-WRBW Orlando/WOGX Gainesville to head up the Chicago duopoly.
With news volume at stations increasing overall, the most prolific news producing stations across the country, including many Fox O&Os and affiliates, are finding that making that major commitment — some with 60 hours a week or more — is bringing big benefits to both their bottom lines and brands while strengthening their ties to the community. Fox O&O WJBK Detroit (DMA 11) has promoted Tom Balanowski to VP of engineering and operations. Previously, he was the assistant chief engineer, a position he has held for the past 11 years. Balanowski began his career at the station as technical director in 1982 and was later promoted to master technician.
With the city on the rebound, Detroit’s news-producing affiliates WDIV (NBC), WXYZ (ABC) and WJBK (Fox) are investing heavily in their digital platforms to secure core audiences while drawing the newcomers (artists, techies and the like) lured by the chance to build from the ground up. “We are trying to reinvent ourselves along with them,” says Catherine Badalamente, VP of digital media for Graham Media, which owns NBC affiliate WDIV.
