Just over a year after publication of SMPTE’s 2110 suite of standards for handling professional media over managed IP networks, the TV industry’s focus has switched from how to transport the data to refining the technology supporting the standard.
Its new partner will serve as system integrator with the goal of enabling more customer-specific workflow enhancements.
IP-enabled production and playout models promise cost savings and increased flexibility. And once content flows through a data center, artificial intelligence and machine learning can be used to generate metadata and direct the future distribution, repurposing and archiving of that content.
Metadata Is Key To Improved News Workflow
Broadcasting’s top tech practitioners are focused on improving the speed and use of metadata. ABC’s Tish Graham: “Whether it needs to be a linear piece, or it needs to be OTT or some type of digital piece, we need to build the backend systems and automate them as much as possible to be able to move that content wherever it needs to go, and to be reliable.” And metadata is also essential to find content in an archive or to direct OTT distribution, plus efficient use can also lower overall storage costs. Interoperability, Virtualization Power IP Workflow
Interoperability got a big boost in December 2017 with the publication of SMPTE’s 2110 suite of standards for handling professional media over managed IP networks. Equipment manufacturers and software developers are moving forward quickly to build ST 2110-compliant products. At April’s NAB Show, attendees are certain to see plenty of ST 2110 products introduced, and hear lots of discussions about how to migrate to IP and how best to work in hybrid SDI-IP environments in the meantime.
