TV Preps For Dramatic Technology Changes

From repacking TV spectrum to make way for wireless companies to the next-generation ATSC 3.0 television transmission standard; from IP-based workflows to news technologies and workflows, the television industry expended a lot of time, money and effort this year to position itself for where it must go. This is Part 3 of TVNewsCheck’s annual Year in Review for 2015. Part I, which appeared Monday, reviewed the year’s happenings in local and broadcast network news. Part 2, which ran Tuesday, recapped the year’s highlights in business, regulation, syndicated  and broadcast network programming and new media. 4K, File Formats Challenge Editing Workflow

TV stations are forced to deal with the arrival of new file formats at a dizzying pace. Fortunately for TV broadcasters, a number of vendors of broadcast editing systems have been at work on this problem, and some new approaches to grappling with it will be on display at the 2015 NAB Show. IP, Workflow To Be Highlights At SMPTE 2014

With all of the convention buzz during the NAB Show and IBC that IP received as an alternative to SDI for transport and routing, it’s little wonder SMPTE 2014 would offer a technical deep dive into the underlying technology making IP routing and transport for broadcasters possible. “File-based workflows are another big topic, especially with the addition of IP as a factor as well as new regulations regarding closed captions,” said Sara Kudrle, one of the conference’s chairs.
