National Murrow Awards Recognize Local TV

RTDNA today announced the winners of the 2016 National Edward R. Murrow Awards, which honors outstanding work produced by radio, television and online news organizations. In large-market television, WXIA-WATL Atlanta scored a triple win for Continuing Coverage, Investigative Reporting and Writing. In small-market television, WVUE New Orleans had a double win for Series and Use of Video and WISC Madison, Wis., got a triple win for Overall Excellence, Newscast and Feature Reporting.

Fox Looking To Swap WOFL For WVUE

Sources say that Fox wants to trade its WOFL Orlando, Fla., to get WVUE in New Orleans, which is owned by Louisiana Media Co., but run by Raycom. Fox wants to own the Fox station in the Big Easy, home to the NFL New Orleans Saints, a strategy it’s followed before.

An accidental technical glitch at the New Orleans Fox affiliate caused 1 minute and 24 seconds of Sunday’s (May 4) Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey to be abruptly overrun with a news promo, a seat-belt-safety public-service announcement and commercials. The problem: The interruption occurred while host Neil DeGrasse Tyson was in the middle of a discussion about how global climate change millions of years ago set the stage for the primates-to-humans evolutionary journey.

Digital Media Moves To Fill NOLA Paper Void

Advance Publications’ announcement in May that it was cutting back the print edition of New Orleans’ venerable newspaper The Times-Picayune and expanding digital coverage sent shockwaves through the city, raising a tremendous hue and cry from the daily’s print loyalists. The question now facing “Crescent City” media is whether the market is ready to embrace a digitally-centric news future.
