Meteorologist Jon Rivas Joins KCCI News

Jon Rivas

Hearst Television CBS affiliate KCCI Des Moines, Iowa has added Jon Rivas as the new meteorologist on KCCI 8 News This Morning. He joins anchors Alyx Sacks, Eric Hanson and Scott Carpenter following the promotion of Jason Sydejko to chief meteorologist.

Rivas’s passion for weather began as a child during the historic floods of San Antonio in 1998. He studied Atmospheric Science at Texas A&M. Following graduation in 2013, he worked as a camera operator at KENS San Antonio. He practiced weathercasting between shifts, which led to an opportunity to become the morning meteorologist at KIMT Mason City, Iowa, in 2015, where he covered local weather trends in the area for three and a half years. During this time, he was honored with a Regional Emmy Award in 2018 for winter weather coverage. In 2019 he moved to central Iowa to be closer to family.

KCCI President-GM Brian Sather said: “KCCI prides itself on building the best teams for all newscasts. Our newest addition, Jon Rivas, will continue to uphold our high standards as Iowa’s News Leader. Throughout his career, Jon has demonstrated engagement and accuracy during all types of weather events in Iowa. His resolve to make sure viewers get the most up-to-date information is exactly why we are proud to add him to our team,”

“Jon will be a wonderful addition to our weather team,” said KCCI News Director Allison Smith. “His passion for weather and positivity are infectious. People will enjoy spending their mornings with Jon and the rest of our morning team.”
