KCCI Expands Weekend Morning Newscasts

The Hearst CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, is adding two hours on Saturday and Sunday starting at 5 o'clock. It also adds long-time KCCI Anchor Steve Karlin to its weekday morning team.

Hearst-owned KCCI Des Moines, Iowa (DMA 72), which already features a 4:30 a.m. weekday newscast, is expanding again by adding two hours to its weekend morning newscasts.

The CBS affiliate will add an hour of news each weekend morning at 5 a.m. Saturday’s lineup will be KCCI NewsChannel 8 from 5 to 6 a.m., the CBS Early Show from 6 to 8 and KCCI NewsChannel 8 from 8 to 9. Sunday’s line up will be KCCI NewsChannel 8 from 5 to 8, followed by CBS Sunday Morning.

As part of the news expansion, long-time KCCI anchor Steve Karlin will join the weekday morning anchor team along with Katie Ward and meteorologist Wes Callison. KCCI anchor Marcus McIntosh joins the weekend morning team of Amanda Lewis and meteorologist Metinka Slater. KCCI anchor Kevin Cooney will join Cynthia Fodor and meteorologist Kurtis Gertz at 5 p.m. on KCCI’s First News At Five.

“Morning news is an increasingly important time period for our viewers and our advertisers, and I’m excited to be leading the way in central Iowa with yet another newscast expansion,” said KCCI President-GM Paul Fredericksen.
