KCCI, Paper To Host Senate Race Debate

The Hearst Des Moines, Iowa, CBS affil and The Des Moines Register will sponsor the Sept. 28 debate between Senate candidates Joni Ernst and Bruce Braley.

Hearst Television CBS affiliate KCCI Des Moines, Iowa (DMA 72), and The Des Moines Register are joining forces to host a televised debate between Iowa State Senator Joni Ernst (R) and U.S. Representative Bruce Braley (D).

Ernst and Braley are both competing for Iowa’s Senate seat that will be left vacant when long-time Senator Tom Harkin (D) retires after this term. This debate is the first of three just announced by the two candidates.

“KCCI has a long history of leading political coverage in Des Moines,” said KCCI president-GM Brian Sather. “This broadcast will offer Iowans the first chance to see the two U.S. Senate Candidates debate the issues face-to-face. “I believe our partnership with The Des Moines Register will enhance this coverage and provide viewers and readers the information needed to inform their vote this fall.”

The debate will air live on KCCI from Simpson College in Indianola on Sept. 28 from 5 to 6 p.m. The debate will be moderated by KCCI Senior Anchor Kevin Cooney and Des Moines Register Political Columnist Kathie Obradovich. The debate will also be available via live streams on KCCI.com and DMRegister.com.

not such a big deal. KNPB in Reno has partnered with the Reno Gazette Journal for years on just this kind of broadcast involving many offices, local and statewide. Many PBS member stations do the same thing, complete with live streams.
