COMMENTARY BY LARRY J. SABATO

Cable Should Let The GOP Candidates Debate

It will be easy this year to identify the biggest losers in the GOP debates. They will be the candidates who aren’t on the stage. With a record 17 prominent candidates vying for the Republican nomination (so far), no system for determining admission to the debate stage will please everyone. But the GOP can certainly do better than the statistically unsound procedures announced by Fox News and CNN.

C-SPAN To Preempt First GOP Debate

C-SPAN is partnering with a handful of regional newspapers in early-voting states for a nationally televised forum with the Republican presidential candidates just days before Fox News Channel’s first scheduled debate. The network has invited all 17 of the GOP presidential hopefuls to the Aug. 3 Voters First Forum in New Hampshire. The move was prompted in part by Fox News Channel’s controversial decision to cap the number of candidates in its Aug. 6 debate at 10.

FNC Sets GOP Forum For More Candidates

Fox News Channel will host a candidate forum for Republican candidates who do not qualify for the network’s GOP debate on Aug. 6. “As we noted when we first announced the debate criteria, our intention has always been to provide coverage to the wide field of Republican candidates and we are glad to present these details today,” said FNC executive vice president of news editorial Michael Clemente. The forum, in Cleveland, will be moderated by Bill Hemmer and Martha MacCallum. It will be carried live on Fox News from 1 to 3 p.m. ET.

Fewer Candidate Debates In Big Races

Across the country, in some of the most competitive contests for Senate seats and governorships and some of the least, incumbent office-holders are refusing to meet their opponents in front of television cameras. The dearth of televised debates isn’t for lack of trying: Media outlets have proposed dozens of televised forums. But this year, more than ever before, candidates have squabbled over venues, hosts, dates and formats for debates — and as a consequence, all but a small handful of the faceoffs, rare opportunities for voters to weigh two candidates against each other, have been canceled.
