KMIZ Adds 6:30 P.M. News, Goes HD

The JW Broadcasting ABC affiliate debuted its new newscast on Monday while simultaneously converting its local broadcasts to high definition with new production equipment and graphics.

JW Broadcasting’s ABC affiliate KMIZ Columbia-Jefferson City, Mo. (138), launched the market’s first prime access newscast at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10. The premiere of ABC 17 News at 6:30 also provided the backdrop for the station to start broadcasting local news in high definition on both KMIZ and its co-owned Fox affiliate KQFX-LD.

The HD conversion included all new production equipment including video switchers, edit stations and field cameras. A new graphic package designed by Eaton Design was also unveiled.

Along with the addition of the 6:30 p.m. news, KMIZ opened a newsroom in Jefferson City with the ability to broadcast live. Evan Millward will report from Jefferson City on a nightly basis.

ABC 17 News at 6:30 is co-anchored by the newest member of the station’s news team, Meredith Hoenes. This is the veteran anchor/reporter’s second stint in Columbia-Jefferson City. Hoenes is a University of Missouri Journalism School graduate who anchored at KOMU from 1999 to 2002.  She has spent the last seven years reporting and hosting in Kansas City.

In addition to appearing on ABC 17 News at 6:30, Hoenes will join co-anchor Ryan Tate at 9 p.m. on KQFX and 10 p.m. on KMIZ.
