Smollett Preemptions Hold Back Daytime Ratings

The only top-5 talker moving up in the week ending Feb. 24 was Ellen DeGeneres, which recovered 9% from a similar decline the week before to a second-place 2.4 behind Dr. Phil, which slipped 3%.

Preemptions for coverage of the Feb. 21 Chicago police announcement of felony criminal charges against Empire star Jussie Smollett were a drag on ratings for most daytime shows in the session ending Feb. 24.

For example, the only top-5 talker moving up was Ellen DeGeneres, which recovered 9% from a similar decline the week before to a second-place 2.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Dr. Phil remained far in front of the field for the 129th week in a row, despite dipping 3% from its season high to a 3.2.

The other talk shows in the big 5 — Live with Kelly and Ryan, Maury and Steve Harvey’s Steve — all held their ground at or near their best levels of the season with 2.3, 1.5 and 1.4, respectively. In addition, Steve clocked the largest year-to-year improvement among all daytime strips, jumping 56%.

Elsewhere, Judge Judy continued to pack a ratings wallop, racking up another frame at its season high 7.9 and finishing first in households among all programs in syndication for the 33rd straight week. That was up 1% for the week and 8% ahead of last year. Among women 25-54, Judy and Family Feud were tied for first place at a 3.2.

On the magazine front, sophomore Daily Mail TV had the largest percentage increase, leaping 10% to a 1.1, which matched its series high and tied Extra, which held steady at a 1.1. Extra, in turn, scored the greatest annual increase of any show in access, surging 57% from last year.

Also of note, Access shot up 14% week to week among women 25-54.

In the game show arena, the race tightened as Jeopardy rose 5% to a 6.8, tying usual leader Family Feud, which was flat at a 6.8. Not far behind was Wheel of Fortune, which picked up 3% to a 6.7.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.3, -13% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, unchanged), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (1.0, unchanged)
  • Maury (0.8, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (0.7, unchanged)
  • Steve (0.6 unchanged), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.6, unchanged)
