Gannett is cleared to close on its purchase of the MNT affiliate from Tribune for $180 million.
The FCC announced today that it has approved Gannett’s purchase of WATL Atlanta from Tribune for $180 million.
The deal gives Gannett a duopoly in the ninth-largest mark. It already owns the market’s NBC affiliate, WXIA.
Gannett is inheriting WATL’s affiliation with My Network Television, Fox’s new network based on two telenovellas each night. In an interview with TVNewsCheck two weeks ago, Gannett Broadcasting CEO Roger Odgen hinted that WXIA wil produce a newscast for WATL, but revealed no other programming plans.
