March Madness Disrupts Syndication Brackets

Preemptions for the basketball tournament in the week ending March 22 help shake things up. Family Feud knocks Jeopardy out of the No. 2 game show spot and came within a tenth of a point of leader Wheel of Fortune.

March Madness spread over syndication in the week ending March 22, as early round NCAA basketball tournament action caused numerous preemptions.

Dr. Phil was in reruns for most of the frame, but continued to rule the talk shows for the 10th consecutive session and the 25th time in the last 29 weeks with a 3.0 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

In addition, the show grew 11% from last year. Among women 25-54, Phil was also top rated for the week with a 1.5 in the demo.

Live with Kelly & Michael was a strong second with a 2.9 in households.

Next in line, Ellen DeGeneres recovered to a third-place 2.6 after a double-digit drop the week before.

Other talkers moving up included:

BRAND CONNECTIONS

  • Steve Harvey, which improved 6% to a 1.9 in households and jumped 13% among women 25-54.
  • Wendy Williams, which add 6% to a 1.7 in households and climbed 8% in the key demo.
  • Rachael Ray, which heated up 8% to a 1.4 in households and strengthened 17% in the women 25-54 target demo.
  • Dr. Oz, which recovered 8% to a 1.4 in households, but was still down 30% from last year, the most of any talker in the top 10.
  • Meredith Vieira, which rose 10% to a 1.1 households rating.

In access, the Steve Harvey-hosted Family Feud was up 2% to a 6.5, and, for the first time this season, unseated usual No. 2 game show Jeopardy, which fell 6% to a 6.3.

Feud also came within a tenth of a point of nailing leader Wheel of Fortune, which weakened 3% to a 6.6.

Among magazines, Access Hollywood had the biggest increase, advancing 6% to a 1.8. Entertainment Tonight led the category, gaining 3% to a 3.4. Dish Nation matched its all-time household high of a 1.2, topping The Insider for the first time.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.5, -12% from the week before)
  • Maury (1.4, -7%), tied with Live with Kelly & Michael (1.4, unchanged) and Ellen DeGeneres (1.4, +17%)
  • Wendy Williams (1.3, +8%)
