Local OTT Pioneers To Share Best Practices

At TVNewsCheck’s annual NewsTECHForum on Dec. 11 in New York, Michael Depp will moderate a discussion among four broadcast experts on how to make the most of OTT content, tech and monetization.

Pioneering broadcasters in the over-the-top television (OTT) space will share their best practices for optimizing content, technology and monetization opportunities at NewsTECHForum on Dec. 11 at the New York Hilton.

Jeff Benninghoff, VP-GM of WWSB Tampa, Fla.; Ian Stinson, executive director, digital audience and product at Cox Media Group; Frank Mungeam, Knight professor of practice in TV news innovation at Arizona State University; and Derek Gebler, VP of broadcast and video at TownNews, will participate in the discussion, which will be moderated by TVNewsCheck’s Special Projects Editor Michael Depp.

The panel will run from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Dec. 11.

“Audiences, especially younger demographics, are in a steady migration to OTT, and broadcast news needs to find its place and revenue opportunities there,” Depp said. “Jeff, Ian and Frank have been way out in front of the pack on this platform and can speak firsthand to tackling its programming and technology challenges, along with its best prospects for monetization. Derek’s technology has been helping broadcasters and newspapers plant the OTT flag from early on.”

The sixth annual NewsTECHForum, set for Dec. 10-11 at the New York Hilton, will bring together engineering, news, production and digital leaders to discuss excellence in news storytelling and news workflow.

Keynote interviews will feature Valari Staab, president of NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, and Christy Tanner, EVP-GM of CBS News Digital. Additional panels and presentations will tackle optimizing production in the field; live news production over IP; attracting younger news audiences with technology; optimizing news production in the field; and top technologists on the industry’s bleeding edge.

NewsTECHForum is co-located with the SportsVideoGroup Summit, which gathers nearly 2,000 sports technologists and production managers to talk about excellence in sports production. The Summit features a technology showcase, open to NewsTECHForum attendees, of more than 75 companies.

This year’s NewsTECHForum will also feature the first annual Social Media Excellence Awards, recognizing extraordinary engagement and innovation by local TV brands and talent.
