The sportscaster will be honored during the Broadcasters Foundation of America’s Golden Mike Award fundraising dinner at New York’s Plaza Hotel on March 14.

Gray TV CEO Hilton Howell will be honored at the fundraising affair on Monday, March 14, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

“There’s never been a better opportunity to make an impact by giving back and helping those in our business who have been hit by tragic and unthinkable circumstances,” said Tim McCarthy, the organization’s co-president.

That donation boosts its 11 years of giving to the foundation to nearly $400,000. All money raised during the Broadcasters Foundation of America’s 11th annual membership drive supports radio and television broadcasters in need.

More than $1.8 million in aid to be awarded in 2021 to colleagues in need. This year’s plea for donations follows a year-and-a-half of several canceled fundraising events due to the COVID 19 pandemic, even as more broadcasters than ever are reaching out for monthly or emergency relief.

As Jim Thompson announces his retirement at the end of 2022, he and Tim McCarthy will serve as co-presidents for a year, after which Thompson will move into a consultant role.

The funds were raised Monday at the Broadcasters Foundation of America’s Celebrity Golf Tournament in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., to support broadcasters in need.

The awards will be presented to Byron Allen, Pierre Bouvard, Ralph Oakley, Christine Travaglini and Dennis Wharton at the Broadcasters Foundation Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 12, During the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

“In its more than 70 years of existence, The Broadcasters Foundation of America has provided financial assistance to every broadcaster who qualified, and we want to continue that track record,” says Scott Herman, the organization’s chairman. It needs help now due to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 20 requests have come in over the past six days from employees in Texas and surrounding states of Tegna, Nexstar, Radio One, Entercom, Fox and more, with the first of those checks going out to qualifying individuals yesterday (Feb 24).

The organization will award more than $1.7 million in aid this year to broadcasters and their families in need.

The charity launches a plea for donations to counter losses from multiple fundraising events that had to be scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Never in our history as broadcasters have we experienced an event that has caused this much hardship,” said Dan Mason, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “Thus, we have revised provisions to our emergency grant eligibility guidelines.”

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has been tapped to receive the Broadcasters Foundation of America’s Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award. The award is given to an “individual in broadcasting” whose work “exemplifies innovation, community service, advocacy, and entrepreneurship.”

The annual career-recognition honors will be presented at the Broadcasters Foundation Breakfast on Wednesday, April 22, during the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The Inside Edition anchor will emcee the dinner honoring Tegna’s Dave Lougee and Beasley’s George Beasley on March 4 that will feature a performance by Nile Rodgers & Chic.

The charitable organization, which will distribute more than $1.3 million in aid this year, is kicking off its annual year-end appeal today, Giving Tuesday.
