CNN’s Morning Plan Will Face A.M. Scramble

CNN’s new chief hopes primetime anchor Don Lemon can help the network gain ground in some of TV news’ toughest terrain. Chris Licht, who has vowed to tone down some of the more aggressive commentary at the network since taking its reins earlier this year, has enjoyed an eyebrow-raising streak in morning news. Now he’s betting he can do the same for CNN, even as TV networks are seeing new challenges to their sunrise efforts.

L.A. TV News Shakeup: KCAL Adds Morning Block As KCBS Double Pumps ‘CBS Mornings’

CBS-owned Los Angeles TV stations KCAL and KCBS are set to shake up the local news landscape in the fall with a programming flip that will bring the first morning newscasts to KCAL. KCAL will carry seven hours of news, starting at 4 a.m. and stretching to 11 a.m. KCBS has long carried local news from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., followed by the West Coast feed of network morning show CBS Mornings at 7-9 a.m. With the switch, KCBS will run the East Coast edition of the live CBS Mornings  from 4 to 6 a.m., followed by the West Coast edition in its regular 7-9 berth. In the 6-7 hour, KCBS will simulcast KCAL’s local newscast.

‘CBS This Morning’ Hosts Broadcast From Home

CBS This Morning co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil anchored the Monday morning broadcast from each of their respective homes as the coronavirus crisis continues. “Welcome to CBS This Morning — from our house to yours,” King said at the opening of the show. “We’re coming to you from each of our homes this morning because we, like you, are practicing social distancing out of an abundance of caution. Like so many Americans watching right now, we are at home.”

How A.M. News Grapples With Trump And Tech

In sunrise visits to six of the nation’s most-watched a.m. programs, Variety found anchors taking on more roles as their networks extend into digital video and social media; producers working to beat their rivals in the traditional ratings, all the while hoping their networks monetize experimental ways of reaching viewers; and news personnel trying to figure out how to balance an increasing amount of hard news with the lighter tone that has been a hallmark of the time slot.

‘Today,’ ‘GMA,’ Morning War Gains New Heat

Today and ABC’s Good Morning America are locked in a neck-and-neck race for dominance among the eggs-and-O.J. crowd, and their split has been stratified for months. For more than three years, GMA has typically commanded more viewers overall, while Today consistently dominated people between 25 and 54. Yet for the past two weeks, the dynamic has gone topsy-turvy: GMA has won more viewers in that all-important category, while still maintaining its overall audience lead.

After ceding its status as the most-watched morning show in the U.S. to NBC’s Today for the past seven weeks, ABC’s Good Morning America bounced back, winning the most viewers overall for the five days ending Jan. 19. Today continued its dominance, however, in the more important category, winning viewers between 25 and 54, the demographic coveted most by advertisers.
