Q&A WITH SALLYANN SALSANO

Being Different, Relatable Is Driving ‘The Real’

SallyAnn Salsano’s freshman panel show is posting encouraging ratings, good enough that distributor Warner Bros. is lining up stations for a second season. “I think we’re like a fungus,” says Salsano of 495 Productions. “We’ll grow and grow and take over. We’re reaching the [young] demographic that’s the hardest to reach in daytime TV. But, we know we have to grow the ratings. We need the word of mouth to spread.”

CBS Sees ‘Hot Bench’ As ‘Latifah’ Successor

The freshman three-judge panel show looks to move from the CBS duopoly stations to CBS-network stations in fall 2015 in timeslots now occupied by the departing Queen Latifah talk show.

Suze Orman’s Money Wars will air five days a week and focus on families, friends and couples whose disputes about money are affecting their lives. The new show comes as the personal finance expert ends her 14-year run as host of CNBC’s The Suze Orman Show in March 2015.

End Of The Run For ‘Queen Latifah’

Sony Pictures Television is canceling the syndicated talker after two seasons, opting not to renew it for next year. It will remain in production through March and will air original episodes through the end of season next May.

CTD Drops Jerry O’Connell Syndie Show

CTD has been pitching Man in the Middle to station groups for months. The show has been well received by stations, some of whom say Jerry O’Connell — who has guest co-hosted shows like ABC’s The View — is an energetic, talented and likeable host. His co-hosts, including his wife Rebecca Romijn, were less polished but the show was still quite good, station general managers say. It’s unclear why CTD decided not to go forward.

Rookie ‘Hot Bench’ Heating Up Syndication

The show, which is carried on stations owned by CBS, Tribune, Sinclair and others, is the No. 1 freshman in first-run broadcast syndication in total households and is tied for second in the women 25-54 demo. “It’s doing better than many people were expecting,” says Bill Carroll, VP and director of programming at Katz Television Group. “It usually takes time for the audience to find a new show and be comfortable with it. It seems the audience is embracing this one.”

Eisner Sued For Fraud Over ‘Judge Faith’

Looks like the producers of the brand new syndicated show from the bench could end up in front of a judge themselves. Craig Ferguson Plays It Loose With New Show

For Ferguson, the syndicated game show Celebrity Name Game represents both a change of pace and a transition. He’s leaving his CBS talk show in December, with British actor James Corden taking over next year. “I liked this one because the format was loose and it left a lot of room for playing around and improvisation,” he said. “And it’s a new format, which meant that people weren’t in love with the game itself and wouldn’t get mad at me if I started messing around with it.”

Laying Out The Odds: The New Syndie Shows

Having a well-known host does not guarantee a new talk show’s survival. Just ask Katie Couric and Arsenio Hall, two of the highest-profile talk show hosts to debut in syndication over the past few years. Both their efforts failed. This week another new batch of shows premieres, and they hope to survive until a second season against very tall odds.
