CBS is ending its 58-year affiliation with LIN’s WISH Indianapolis on Dec. 31. WTTV, owned by Tribune Broadcasting, will be the new home for CBS programming. WISH GM Les Vann, even with his station stripped of major-network entertainment and sports, is keeping his sights set on the top. For starters, the strategy is to expand news programming by four hours each weekday. “We want to ultimately be the No. 1 independent television station in the country,” Vann says. “With our rich heritage, we can build to that point. We’re not starting from scratch here. This has been a very good television station for six decades.”

Beginning Jan. 1, 2015, the new independent will add 20 hours per week of local news.

He joins LIN’s soon-to-be-independent station in Indianapolis on Oct. 6 and will also be responsible for sales at co-owned MNT affiliate WNDY.

He takes over the helm of LIN’s CBS-MNT duopoly in Indianapolis, joining from LIN’s WJCL Savannah, Ga., where he will be succeeded by Steve Doerr.

With the upcoming loss of its CBS affiliation because it wouldn’t meet the network’s reverse comp demands, LIN’s WISH Indianapolis has to find new programming starting next year. LIN has put together a team with experience at indie operations. Whatever they come up with, a big factor needs to be more and better local news, a tall order in a market that already produces a lot of newscasts, but one that the Peabody-winning WISH should be able to handle.

The broadcaster has put together a team to figure out what to do when it loses its CBS affiliation at the end of the year. No matter what, CEO Vince Sadusky says it’s “committed to localism, which is a core part of our values and strategies.”

The change from $27.82 a share to $25.97 follows the loss of CBS affiliation for LIN’s WISH Indianapolis. Given that LIN has 55.6 million shares outstanding, the per-price reduction shaves $103 million off the total value of the deal.

In moving its Indianapolis affiliation from LIN to Tribune, CBS is sending the message that “if the incumbent doesn’t meet the value that we perceive it to be, we will certainly test the marketplace,” says CBS’s Ray Hopkins.

One of the benefits of my job is that as I travel around the country working with TV stations, I see story ideas that spread like kudzu from one market to the next. One station in one city finds some success with the story, others hear about it, copy the idea and localize it.  I find most of these cut and paste ideas pop up around “sweeps” months and most are awful.  Here’s one that isn’t. It is worth looking at where you are and it may keep some kid from getting hurt.

LIN’s CBS affiliate in Indianapolis promotes its assistant news director to fill the top spot that became vacant in August when Patti McGettigan left.

Three of the market’s four news-producing stations are without news directors. Industry watchers, including those with particular interest in the country’s 26^th largest market, say they don’t believe there is any mystery behind the rash of departures, chalking it up mostly to coincidence — and the intense competition for news leadership there.
