Stations Eye Virtual Master Control, Playout
Everyone from smaller station groups to major playout centers are examining software- and cloud-based solutions as they look at consolidation, centralization and density of operations. But whether IP and virtualization can replace all SDI functionality today remains a “big question mark” for many broadcasters. Above, Grass Valley’s iTX channel control. IP Delivering Video From Field To Screen
New streaming encoders in cameras are delivering HD picture quality good enough to go directly to air. That gives stations new options for IP contribution besides the common bonded cellular workflow. Media Asset Management For The Masses
More and more broadcasters are investing in software-based media asset management systems that use metadata to track a piece of content from ingest through production to playout, then archive it in a way that allows easy future access. Broadcast TV Audio Riding The IP Wave
As broadcasters’ comfort level in doing things over IP networks has risen, more and more vendors are offering ATSC 3.0-compatible products that include such features as immersive sound and object-based audio. At the same time, wireless microphone vendors and their customers are tackling the present-day challenge of moving off of the 600 MHz UHF spectrum. Interoperability, Virtualization Power IP Workflow
Interoperability got a big boost in December 2017 with the publication of SMPTE’s 2110 suite of standards for handling professional media over managed IP networks. Equipment manufacturers and software developers are moving forward quickly to build ST 2110-compliant products. At April’s NAB Show, attendees are certain to see plenty of ST 2110 products introduced, and hear lots of discussions about how to migrate to IP and how best to work in hybrid SDI-IP environments in the meantime. TiVo is introducing a next-generation platform designed to allow mid-size pay-TV operators to embrace IPTV and offer customers a modern, app-based user experience across a range of devices. It’ll be on display next week at CES in Las Vegas.
The list of gear and technologies expected to command broadcasters’ attention and wallets next year includes the transition from SDI to IP infrastructure using clouds; transmitters and other RF gear to handle station migration to new channels; ATSC 3.0; plus a lot of activity involving cameras, bonded cellar, multichannel workflow and virtual sets.
The Gores Group, owner of the media tech company, is committed to its strategy of leading the media’s transition to software-based IP production and distribution, say the newly named CEO Tom Cotney and man he replaced, Charlie Vogt, who will join Gores and look to expand Imagine’s “product set” through mergers and acquisitions.

Bonded Cell Matures In Reliability, Acceptance
Bonded cellular — using IP over the wireless network — is the go-to medium for TV reporters in the field, while microwave and satellite are secondary, though still important, alternatives. However, some predict a resurgence in microwave as those vendors rise to meet the challenges of bonded cellular. And bonded is not sitting still, it’s moving ahead with 5G wireless technology.

Workflow Efficiency Key At Gray’s New WMTV
WMTV went live from a new 32,000-square-foot facility in Madison, Wis., with its entire operation in late October 2016. The new home of the Gray Television-owned NBC affiliate was designed “from the inside out” from a technical point of view, according to WMTV VP-GM Don Vesely, with an eye toward maximizing the efficiency of the various workflows that drive news and its other operations.
