Univision calls this generation “billennials.” And they increasingly consume their media in English.

Telemundo’s Boston station plans to launch its first local Spanish-language newscasts this summer, the latest step in a push by parent company NBCUniversal to add programming for Hispanic viewers. The station says it will hire five journalists to produce two half-hour newscasts on weekdays at 6 and 11 p.m. WNEU will share studio space, footage and sometimes personnel with New England Cable News, another NBCU property with an editorial staff of about 130.

Telemundo and NBC Universo are loading up on new shows that are a big departure for Spanish-language television, from scripted drama series to shows with second-screen apps and virtual reality woven into the storytelling. TeleXitos features TV series from the 1970’s on, including Miami Vice, The A-Team and Ripley’s Believe It or Not, as well as action flicks like Hulk, The Interpreter and The Musketeer. All content will be in Spanish with no subtitles. Debuting today, TeleXitos is available in 16 markets and replaces Exitos, which aired telenovelas.
The stations will air the extra newscasts at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT (4:30 p.m. CT/MT). They will lead into an existing half-hour newscast and then the national network news. Two other stations will likely add similar newscasts next year.
